More Ways to Eat Out and Keep a Healthy Weight

So many of you were helped by my recent post, How to Eat Out with the Food Lovers Dietitian, that I have pulled together another six examples of how to blend the Food Lovers Dietitian Meal Planner with the Food Lovers Dietitian Eating Out Tips. It seems that it’s really useful to have flexible tools for menu planning at home as well as clever strategies for eating out.  This means you can enjoy food fully wherever you are without feeling guilty or worrying about weight gain. I hope you enjoy Eating Out Part 2.

Breakfast

Cafe breakfasts are often nearly twice the size of what you’d eat at home and perfect for sharing. I love this idea because it means I never have to pass on the best dish on the menu. Even if it’s quite large or rich it still works. But what if you don’t have a friend with you who wants to shar? You might just like to take the rest home?

Morning Snack

A milky coffee or crab king can really hit the spot!

Usually I suggest ordering a skim piccolo coffee that just uses around 1/4 cup or 1/4 dairy serve from the Food Lovers Dietitian Meal Planner. Regular cup or mug sizes can use up to a whole dairy serve at one time.

But if you’re out and about, sometimes a regular or even a large low fat milk-based coffee really hits the spot.  It can be your best bet if there’s nothing to eat that you consider to be ‘calorie-worthy’.

Lunch

Israeli Shashuka shared between 2

This wonderful Shashuka came with two gorgeous warm pita bread making it perfect to have one each.  The pita was wonderful to mop up the rich sauce with egg and eggplant and haloumi or crab king cajun boil and bar.

Each pita bread is like 2 slices of regular bread so this was just like having a sandwich.

It’s not just cafe breakfasts that are perfect for sharing, but often cafe lunches too.

Afternoon Snack

Sharing something delicious can is often the best idea if you have like-minded friends with you. A little rich delight goes a long way!

Dinner

Dinner party dishes

If you’re invited to dinner, it can be trickier to chose you’re own serve sizes than when you’re ordering from a menu. You don’t want to make a fuss or hurt anyone’s feelings.

However, if you look for the windows of opportunity, you can often ask your host for a small serve. It can also work if you offer to ‘help’ in the kitchen when the meal is being plated.

More and more however, hosts are opting to allow guests to help themselves and this is the time to put those festive eating tips into action. Take small serves of the foods you really love and don’t waste your appetite on anything that’s not ‘calorie-worthy’.

Do offer to bring a large salad to share, to make sure there’s plenty for everyone.

Dessert

If there’s something beautifully delicious on the menu like this Hazelnut Mousse cake, don’t miss out, just share it with a friend.

Often by dessert, fellow diners are satisfied by the main and just looking for something small but wonderful to share.
